Raking Clams (1948)

Lower Eastern Shore, Maryland

Hard clams are harvested on the lower Eastern shore, as shown here. Most watermen pull them out with rakes – sometimes operating in hip-deep water – but a number still prefer to dig them out with their toes. A good foot man can bring up as many as 7,000 daily.
