Important Update: Hoopla Service Change Starting April 1, 2025

Due to budget constraints and increased popularity, the Eastern Shore Regional Library (ESRL) has decided to implement a daily spending limit for hoopla across all eight libraries on the Eastern Shore.

How does this impact me?

When the Shore-wide daily budget for hoopla has been met, you will see the following message from hoopla:

The collective daily borrow limit set by your library has been reached and will be reset a midnight. Please browse and add titles to favorites so you can easily access them after midnight.

Don't worry - there's nothing wrong with your hoopla account. You just won't be able to borrow anything new from hoopla until after midnight when the spending limit is reset. You can mark the things you want to borrow as "Favorites" by clicking the small heart symbol so that they're easy to find and checkout when you come back. If you really need to download something immediately, check Libby's "Available Now" content for eBooks and eAudio.

Why is this change being made?

hoopla has gotten more and more popular across the Eastern Shore since we started offering it in 2016. We love that you love hoopla so much! However, unlike regular library books, hoopla operates on a cost-per-checkout basis, so that each time something is checked out from hoopla, ESRL is charged a fee. This model is really useful in that it means you never have to wait to borrow from hoopla - but it also means that the more we (on the Shore) borrow, the more it costs. With hoopla usage increasing dramatically over the years, ESRL has made the tough decision to slow the spending down on a daily basis a bit, rather than cut the number of checkouts you can make per month or limiting which items you can borrow.

Please continue to use hoopla (and all of our other eResources) and know that we're working hard to keep giving you access to the best content we can find. Want to read something while you wait? Check Libby's "available now" content!

Given the increased popularity of hoopla and eBooks, these measures will ensure that hoopla remains accessible for all patrons on the Eastern Shore. Thank you for understanding! We appreciate your flexibility as we navigate these difficult decisions.
