Job Title: Assistant Branch Manager
Supervisor: Branch Manager
Job Classification: Exempt
Supervisory Responsibility: Library Associates, Circulation Clerks, Custodians, Pages, Part-time Hourly staff, or Volunteers.
Position Description: Reporting to the branch manager, this position acts as part of branch’s management team and assists in the management of branch operations and scheduling. May assume responsibility for branch operations as designated person in charge in absence of Branch Manager. Under the general direction of the branch manager, manages and coordinates the maintenance of the library collection, programming and outreach services. Proactively coaches, supervises, and evaluates the performance of assigned staff. Collaborates with other management team members to develop and implement a customer service model aligned with community needs and system-level priorities. Handles patron, staff, and building issues. Professional level work in providing library services including reference, readers' advisory, programming and outreach, and library instruction to the public of all ages. Work requires maintaining considerable expertise in the use of information technology including, but not limited to, e resources, email, and the internet.
Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a Bachelor's Degree and three year's work experience in a library or educational setting. One year of supervisory experience.
Completion of Library Associate Training Institute within two years following appointment; and ability to maintain eligibility by completing 90 hours of training every 5 years.
Schedule: Must be able to work evenings and weekends and be flexible with one’s work schedule to meet daily operational requirements.
Essenntial Duties:
- Public Service
- Provides information, instruction, and readers’ advisory services to patrons of all ages
- Assists at the Circulation Desk and/or with circulation activities
- Assists with interlibrary loan services when material is not available in TCFL
- Explains and implements library policies and procedures
- Reviews, schedules and/or oversees meeting room bookings
- Promotes library programs, resources, and services
- Collection Maintenance
- Assists with branch collection development, maintenance, including monitoring and weeding assigned areas
- Oversees magazine and/or newspaper collections
- Creates displays to market collection Recommends replacement and requests new materials.
- Programming & Outreach
- Plans and conducts programs and outreach activities for a variety of age groups
- Plans, schedules and/or presents library instruction, either one-on-one or in groups, on topics such as computer use, eBooks and E-resources
- Conducts library tours and/or presentations for students, community groups and/or businesses
- Oversees library programming and services offered by community partners
- Submits and verifies program and publicity information
- Coordinates and/or visits schools to promote library resources and services
- Submits information and statistics for programming and outreach activities
- Maintains programming and outreach supplies
- Supervision
- Instructs and coaches staff in the objectives, policies and procedures of TCFL in accordance with its vision/mission and goals
- Plans, assigns/delegates and sets work priorities for staff as appropriate
- Schedules regular meetings with staff and communicates updates regarding branch/department and/or system changes
- Observes, coaches, evaluates and documents performance and recognizes staff contributions in accordance with TCFL policies
- Works with the TCFL staff development team to identify and coordinate staff training and development needs
- Provides counsel and support to staff in acquiring resources, resolving complaints and meeting their department/branch and personal development objectives
- Consults library administration regarding concerns
- Maintains a working knowledge of duties, policies and processes in order to fill in for or assist staff when needed
- Demonstrates and acts in accordance with library core values and serves as a role model and mentor for staff
- Monitors and approves work schedules and time off requests along with Branch Manager
- Branch Support
- Acts as Person In Charge, resolving public service issues, building problems and emergencies
- Seeks advice and regularly communicates with Branch Manager or Library
- Administration
- Assists in development of processes and procedures
- Coordinates and/or creates signage and event posters
- Orders office and/or custodial supplies
- Along with Branch Manager submits statistics for branch activities
- Assists with staff scheduling
- Technology
- Responds to inquiries sent by email, social media, and other networking media
- Provides instruction on and assists in the use of the library’s technology, including (but not limited to) online catalogs, internet, apps, relevant software, e-resources, audio-visual equipment, library laptops and public computers and printing stations
- Demonstrates general interest in library and popular technology, and an awareness of trends and current events in technology
- Ability to troubleshoot common library equipment
- Ability to adapt to and willingness to learn new technology as it relates to the library, and explain/promote new technologies to patrons
- Regularly attends relevant training to keep abreast of and learn new technology
- Uses a variety of software, databases and spreadsheets and the library's intranet to maintain records, prepare reports, etc.
- Ability/willingness to assist and train other staff on the use of new technologies

Working Conditions:
- Physical Demands: Job involves a considerable amount of movement and activity to assist patrons, accompany them to resources and retrieve materials from shelves. On an occasional basis, lifting or handling material weighing up to 40 lbs. Work can also include moving booktrucks weighing up to 100 lbs., and moving and arranging meeting room tables and chairs. Work requires standing for long periods of time and some stooping and bending. Regular use of computer monitor, mouse and keyboard.
- Emotional Demands: Some stress related to high degree of public contact, including occasional incidences of complaints or disruptive behavior, normal challenges of supervisory responsibilities and sustained periods of high-volume activity.
- Social Environment: Always people to talk to and work with.
- Physical Environment: Typical office/library environment. Some fluctuations in building temperature related to HVAC problems can cause some periods of uncomfortable heat or cold. Some periods of elevated noise levels during programs and peak times may be experienced.
- Mental Demands: This is professional level work requiring sophisticated reasoning and independent judgment. Work is performed with minimal supervision and allows for some variance in work routine.
