Union Dorcas Society

The Union Dorcas Society was established in 1834 by a group of sixteen
women who helped those who were less fortunate. they took the name
"Dorcas" from the Bible. In The Acts, Chapter 9, verses 36-42,
Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas, was a woman full of
good works and almsdeed. In the beginning the women conducted annual
door-to-door solicitations of funds from the people of Easton to help
the needy. They made clothes and gathered food and gave such aid as
was needed.
The organization still operates under the original constitution and
by-law established in 1834. Members, however, do not solicit
door-to-door, but the organization exists on income from legacies and
memorial donations. The Dorcas Society does its work quickly and
quietly, without bureaucratic red tape. The Society is the
oldest, all-woman, on-going charitable organization in Maryland.
