Paying for the War of 1812 by Ron Lesher
President Jefferson eliminated all taxes in favor of import duties to fund the government. That wasn’t enough to pay for the troops to defend our independence. What to tax? Would you believe an annual tax on watches? Or an annual tax on phaetons and chaises? What else can we tax? Ron Lesher is a retired educator and a lifelong collector of stamps with a special interest in tax stamps. Light refreshments will be served. Event is free and open to the public.
